MOT testing stations near you

An MOT is an annual test on the road and environmental safety of your car, this is a legal requirement for all vehicles over three years old. This is to ensure yours and other drivers’ safety on the roads. Your car must meet the DVSA's minimum standards on the following:

  • Brakes
  • Fuel system
  • Lights (front and rear)
  • Seatbelts
  • Tyres
  • Driver’s view
  • Exhaust systems and more

They will not however test the condition of the engine, clutch and gearbox, these can be checked by booking a full-service. Through our quick and easy online booking system, you can

The most common reasons for failing an MOT:

Lights: a blown bulb on headlights or indicators

  • Tyres: worn tread stopping your vehicle from being able to grip wet roads.
  • Registration plates: damaged or dirty
  • Driver’s view: must have clean and clear windows no stickers or air fresheners blocking your view
  • Brakes: low brake fluid

Checking over your vehicle yourself or booking a service before the MOT could avoid it failing on these easy-to-solve issues.

How long can you drive without an MOT?

The MOT certificate will last 12 months, it is your responsibility to know when it is due and book this in before it expires. There is a common misconception that there is a two-week grace period when your MOT has lapsed however this is only a myth. You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving any vehicle that does not have a valid MOT.

If your car or motorcycle has failed its MOT, you can continue to drive it only if the previous year’s MOT is still valid and no dangerous problems were found.

How much is an MOT?

MOT's cost will vary depending on what type of vehicle you have, currently, the maximum charge for a car is £54.85 and £29.65 for a standard motorcycle mot test.

Should I book my MOT and service together?

As an MOT is only a basic test on safety, we do recommend booking a service at the same time to ensure your vehicle is running as efficiently as possible and increase the lifespan of your vehicle. Often garages will offer a discount when you book the MOT and service together, another plus is that it will save you time having everything checked in one go.

Through ‘Garages Near Me’ you can quickly find your nearest garage, compare prices and book your MOT online to a trusted mot test centre near you.
