A car service is a routine check-up for your car, which is recommended to be performed regularly to ensure your car continues to run smoothly. Having a regular service helps to prolong your car’s life and discover any small faults that could become very costly.

What are the 3 types of car service?

There are three types of car servicing, these are Interim, Full and Major, these names may vary between garages but generally, there will be 3 tiers for you to choose from. Depending on your average mileage and the type of car you have, a mechanic may recommend the following specific services:

  • Interim service: this is a basic service for if you are driving a lot of miles and generally have more than one service performed in a year, every 6 months or 6,000 miles. This service will include oil filter change, oil change and an overall inspection of the lights, tyres and windscreen wipers.
  • Full service: this is an alternative service that is recommended to have annually if you are driving around 12,000 miles and it is your only service in a year. This will include a check on your brakes, gearbox, engine oil and filter, lights, tyres, exhausts, steering, coolant levels, your car's suspension, air conditioning and battery.
  • Major service: this is recommended every 24,000 miles or 24 months. This is the most thorough service package, and it includes everything done in a full service plus those items that are up for replacement every 2 years including the brake and cabin fluid, spark plug replacement and gearbox inspection.

If you have an electric or hybrid car your charging port and all the cables and connections will also be checked during your car service. To book your car service online, compare pricing and find your nearest garage quickly, head over to our booking system.

What is the difference between an MOT and car service?

An MOT is a basic annual test on the road and environmental safety of your car, this is a legal requirement for all vehicles over three years old, you cannot drive your car without a valid MOT. Whereas a car service is not a legal requirement, it is a thorough check of the wear and tear of your vehicle and analyses what is recommended to keep your car running at its best.

We recommend booking both your service and MOT together as this can save you time, resulting in making just one trip to the garage. Often garages will offer a discount when you book them together.

How often should you service your car?

We recommend having at least one car service a year as stated previously. Depending on your average yearly mileage, this may change when your service is due, so a mechanic may suggest more regular Interim services. Although it can be costly there are a lot of benefits to getting your car regularly serviced such as:

  • Making your car more reliable
  • Prolong your car’s life
  • Increases fuel economy
  • Gives your car a higher resale value by including a full-service history

The majority of newer cars will have an indicator to remind you when a service is due, the recommended time between services will also be in your car’s handbook, generally this will be between 10,000 and 20,000 miles.

How much is a car service in Birmingham?

On average in the UK, a car service will vary in price from £100 to £500 depending on what tier service you choose, this does not include any repairs that might be needed following the service.
